Freedom isn’t free.
It’s a mind-numbing,
everyday kind of fight
against the ugly in this world.
It’s trying to calm
the cornered dog,
its claws dug into the ground,
its teeth rearing,
lashing out,
protecting what it knows its lost.
Some people will get bitten.
They will feel the sting
of discrimination,
they will read the headlines
of heartless legislation
demanding their death,
their denial,
their trial in a court
formed of bigots.
Some will die
at the hands of a man
or woman so filled with hatred
in the name of God,
playing God,
where is God?
The closer we come
the more desperate they get.
And when you corner
a rabid dog,
you’re bound to get bit.
